Racing History of Bell & Colvill


Bobby Bell and Martin Colvill have been racing cars collectively for 90 years! In addition, they have supported up and coming driver talent, racing Bell & Colvill supplied Lotus cars.

Both Bobby and Martin have been fortunate to own and race some of the most iconic racecars - from near standard Lotus Elans to F1 and Le Mans racers - detailed below is a potted history of their racing activities.

Bobby Bell started racing in 1961 and has raced 37 different racecars - or that is the number he can remember! Some of the cars Bobby has raced include: Lotus 7, Lola Climax, Piper GT, BRM ex-Rodriguez, Grand Prix-winning BRM P153/02, Trojan F5000, Lister Jaguar, Maserati 250F, Lotus 24 F1, Lotus Elan (numerous!), Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 Barchetta, AC Cobra, Ford GT40, Lola T70, Chevron B8, Chevron B16, Ferrari P2, Jaguar E type, Porsche Carrera RS 2.7, Lotus Elise (lots) AMOC series + Autobytel Lotus Exige to name a few!

Martin Colvill started racing in the early 1970's in an AC Cobra which was progressively developed over 150 odd races during a 15 year period into a full Gurney Weslake 5.0 highly competitive racecar. Other cars Martin raced included a Sports 2000, Maserati 300s, Lola 222, Ecosse C286 and perhaps one of the more iconic racecars - a Gulf Ford GT40 - a sister car to the GT40 that took consecutive Le Mans 24 Hours wins in 1968/69. Martin enjoyed 25 years and lots of events with this car.

Of course all this racing has been great for promoting the Bell & Colvill brand to enthusiasts worldwide and provides the customer with some security that the owners of the business do have some understanding of and genuine passion for performance motoring!

You won't find too many dealer principals with this level of dedication to cars.
