The Ministry of Transport test (usually abbreviated to MOT test) is an annual test of automobile safety, roadworthiness aspects and exhaust emissions required for most vehicles three years old and older that are used on public roads in the United Kingdom.

Why does my vehicle need an MOT?

You are required by law to keep your vehicle in a roadworthy condition if you use it on the road. An MOT test checks that your vehicle meets road safety and environmental standards. If your vehicle is more than 3 years old, you are required to submit it for an MOT test each year. Without a valid MOT, your vehicle’s insurance and road tax could be invalidated.

Vehicles over forty years old that are not substantially modified and are in the historic taxation class on their V5C are exempt from annual MOT but you are still required by law to maintain them in a roadworthy condition if wish to use them on the road.

How soon can I have an MOT test?

MOT tests can be carried out on your vehicle at any time and will expire one year after the date of a successful test. You can also submit your vehicle up to one month prior to the expiry date of an existing MOT certificate; in this case the expiry date of the MOT will be extended by 12 months. If this is your vehicle’s first MOT and the test is carried out in the month prior to the third anniversary of registration, the expiry will then be the fourth anniversary of the vehicle's registration.
